Christy Rupp & Scott Volz in Conversation about Noisy Autumn

March 31, 2022

Virtual Visit: Christy Rupp & Scott Volz in Conversation. Hosted by the Climate Futures Collective (University of California, Irvine).

March 31 @ Noon-1 pm Pacific Time (3-4 pm EST) via Zoom

Christy Rupp and Scott Volz discuss Rupp's life and work as an eco-artist and activist along with her new book, Noisy Autumn: Sculpture and Works on Paper (Mandala publishing 2021).

Since the 1970s, Christy Rupp has investigated the intersections of ecology, animal life, and capitalist violence. Her research-based work in two- and three-dimensional media explores ongoing issues of environmental deterioration, plastic pollution, climate change, mass extinction, and the impact of waste materials on animal species and ecosystems. Using irony, humor, and techniques of visual pleasure, Rupp's figurative sculptures and works on paper transform petrocultural, commercial, and geopolitical objects and imagery into visually sophisticated warnings about the multiscalar degradation of socio-ecological systems.

Rupp will be speaking with Scott Volz (PhD Candidate, Visual Studies) about her long history of ecological art-making and activism. The event will be hosted by the Climate Futures Collective (CFC) at the University of California, Irvine. Bios & Zoom link below

Christy Rupp is an American eco artist and citizen scientist. She moved to the NYC of the late 70s when it faced bankruptcy and offered fertile ground for a generation of artists lucky enough to participate in the petri dish of history, culture and nature that was late capitalist downtown. Originating from an interest in urban ecology and the waste stream, Rupp's work taps into universal themes of climate change and justice.

Scott Volz is a Ph.D. Candidate in Visual Studies at UC Irvine. Scott's research explores art and visual culture's intersections with environmental politics, waste practices, urban ecologies, and human-animal relations. His dissertation, "Deadly Circularity: Waste and Ecology in Art of the 1970s and 1980s," examines a community of artists in New York whose practices capture shifts in environmental thought and politics during the so-called toxic decade (1978-1992). Scott is a co-founder of CFC.

The Climate Futures Collective (CFC) is a student-led research group at UC Irvine-located on the unceded ancestral homelands of the Tongva and Acjachemen peoples-focusing on topics ranging from decolonization and Indigenous sovereignties to racial capitalism, border policies, grassroots movements, and all their various intersections with global climate change. It was co-founded in 2019 by Marianna Davison, Aaron Katzeman, and Scott Volz.
